Washington Sundar to organize for India vs West Indies Exams in England; to play County Championship

That is the second time Washington Sundar will play in County Championship after his stint with Lancashire in 2022

Washington Sundar last featured in a competitive game in England when he starred with seven wickets and 284 runs at an average of close to 50 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He returned to India and now have to fly back to the United Kingdom. It is since the talented Tamil Nadu player has signed a short-term deal with Hampshire. He’ll be available for play the last two County Championship Division One games against Somerset and Surrey.

Washington Sundar gets game time before IND vs WI Tests

Now an integral part of the Indian Test team, Washington Sundar will benefit from playing in English conditions and can surely help Hampshire, who are now in a relegation battle. He is in for two games (15 Sept vs SOM, 24 Sept vs SUR). After his non-selection in India’s Asia Cup squad and also for the India A vs Australia A series, Sundar was available for some action.

The BCCI chose the likes of Manav Suthar, Tanush Kotian and Harsh Dubey as spin-bowling all-rounders for the Australia A games that are scheduled in Lucknow. Sundar, however, is now a certainty in the Indian Test team after his fabulous performances with both bat and ball. His iconic batting knocks at Gabba and Manchester will always be remembered. Also, when India last played Tests at home against New Zealand, Sundar bagged 16 wickets in just two Tests.

The 25-year-old has featured 40 times in First-Class cricket, of which 13 are Test matches, and has scored over 1800 runs at an average of 34. He has also claimed 91 wickets at an average of 28 with best innings figures of 7-59 coming against New Zealand last year.

Hampshire in relegation battle

Meanwhile, Hampshire’s hopes of staying in Division One of the County Championship have taken a major hit after being docked eight points for preparing a “below average” pitch in their May fixture against Sussex. The independent Cricket Discipline Panel ruled that the surface at the Utilita Bowl offered uneven bounce and excessive spin from the second day, leaving batting “a lottery” according to captain Ben Brown. Hampshire were also fined £5000.

The punishment drops them from fifth to eighth in the table, just six points clear of the relegation zone with two matches to play. Sussex had won the game comfortably, with Jack Carson taking 5 for 26 in the second innings. Sussex coach Paul Farbrace noted the pitch was not deliberately poor but “horribly wrong” after being reused too soon. Hampshire now face a tense run-in against Somerset and champions Surrey, while also contending in both domestic white-ball competitions.
